Aside from the Prologue and Epilogue, the entire narrative is revealed through Emily’s limited perspective. What was Sandie Jones able to accomplish by telling this story from Emily’s point of view? How would the novel have been different had Pammie narrated the book?

Is manipulation ever justifiable? Examine the various characters’ motivations behind their manipulative efforts. Pammie uses manipulation to protect Emily. How else might she have saved Emily from Adam’s abuse?

Examine Emily’s character through the lens of forgiveness. Emily finds happiness in her rekindled relationship with Charlotte, and she similarly grows close with Pammie after the women communicate honestly with each other. However, Emily is also quick to forgive Adam’s mistreatment on multiple occasions. Is Emily’s inclination to forgive a virtue or character flaw? Why or why not?
