Activities

Use this activity to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

Salt to the Sea Memorial”

In this activity, students commemorate the people in the novel by creating a refugee memorial to represent the characters.

Create a refugee memorial to represent four of the characters in the novel who made a lasting impact on the story. After creating the memorial, select and include a quote from the book to represent each character; add a description of the character and their contribution to the refugee effort during World War II. Use the questions below to guide your creation:

  • What four characters will you represent in your memorial?
  • How will you create your memorial?
  • What symbols from the novel best represent each character, and how can you incorporate each symbol into the memorial?
  • What quote best represents each character and what they believe in?
  • How will you describe each character to people who have never heard of them?

When you share your memorials with classmates, explain why you chose to represent each character in the way you did.

Teaching Suggestion: Consider using this resource to describe the various methods by which a memorial can be made.
